Choosing and paying for lessons

A 30-minute lesson offers a shorter, focused session; a 60-minute lesson gives us more time for repertoire, reading and technical work. Neither length is restricted to a particular age. Discuss your experience, concentration and goals with me when deciding where to start.

Lessons are pay-as-you-go and can be weekly, fortnightly or arranged to suit you, subject to availability. Regular lessons give you time to review your practice and plan the next steps. Send your usual availability when enquiring; a preferred time is only confirmed once we have agreed it.

Please pay in cash at the end of each lesson. If you have a question about payment or need to discuss another arrangement, contact me before booking.

How much should I budget for piano lessons?

A 30-minute piano lesson with me costs £22. For four lessons, budget £88 for half-hour sessions or £176 for hour-long sessions. Two lessons cost £44 or £88 respectively. These examples cover tuition only and are not fixed monthly charges: your total depends on the lessons you book.

Choose a schedule that leaves you both time to practise and a comfortable budget. You may also need to allow for travel, sheet music or an instrument, depending on what you already have. Discuss books and equipment with me before spending money on them.

What is the average cost of piano lessons in the UK?

There is no single price that applies to every teacher or lesson. As a wider music-tuition benchmark, the ISM’s 2025/26 teaching-fees survey reported a median private teaching rate of £40 per hour. That is the midpoint of the surveyed rates across instruments, not a piano-only national average or a quote for Sheffield lessons.

Compare the actual lesson length, individual or group format, teacher’s experience and what is included. My individual piano lessons are £22 for 30 minutes or £44 for 60 minutes, paid as you go. Ask about availability and the arrangements that suit you before booking.

Cancelling a lesson

Let me know as soon as possible if you cannot attend. If you cancel with less than 24 hours’ notice, you may be charged up to the full lesson fee. If I can fill your slot or save costs, I’ll reduce the charge accordingly. Your legal cancellation rights still apply.
